Wow. A masterclass in how to kill your forum.

Earlier today, at a gaming forum I used to visit regularly ("used to," for reasons that shall become apparent), a board member named bowser submitted a post saying that he thought the general standard of posting was declining. One of the admin replied and said that no, the stats proved that posting was increasing. So I said hang on, since when did quantity of posts relate to quality?

Then the thread got deleted. And bowser got banned.

*Then* a new thread got started up by somebody else asking, wait up, do the deletion of that thread and the banning of that member indicate that the mods here don't give a flying fuck about any standard member's opinion? Is it now forbidden to say anything negative about any aspect of the board, or to question the actions of moderators?

Rather unsurprisingly, and almost as an answer, this thread too was deleted. I still had it in my cache, though, so saved it as an image and posted it up on another gaming forum (at the bottom of the page here) so that evidence of the drastically insane over-moderation taking place was available for those who wished to find it.

I've now been banned, too, presumably because of those two images.

Funny thing is, this ain't the first time that this sort of stupidity has been in evidence over there. Previously, members were banned for posting negative comments about the site's game reviews. Even though those comments were made in the section of the board specifically set aside for comments about reviews, which kind of makes you wonder why they'd invite comments at all. It's got worse since the previous admin - who could be counted on to take advice and complaints on board and act on them as and when - hung up his badge, though.

So this blog post is being written in order that I may have something to point to the next time any halfwitted pillock decides that the moderation of forum x is out of order. Because you ain't seen over-moderation until you've truly seen over-moderation.
